Piedmont, which is located on the border with France and Switzerland, is a wine-growing region in northern Italy. Piedmont translates as "at the foot of the mountains" and has Turin as its capital.
The focus of wine production is in the Langhe region, near the city of Alba. In Piermont, about 3.2 million hectoliters of wine are produced annually, most of which are red wines. 76% of the wines carry the controlled and recognized designation of origin DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) or DOCG (... e Garantita). The area under vine, in the provinces of Alessandria, Asti, Cuneo, Torino and Vercelli, totals 54,800 hectares. The landscape of Piedmont is composed of 43% mountains, 27% plains and 30% hills. The hills of Langhe and Monferrato are examples of good value wine growing areas in the Piedmont region and produce up to 90% of the area's wine.
