The Puglia region forms the spur (the Gargano Mountains) and heel (the Salento Peninsula) of the Italian boot, stretching to the easternmost point of Italy, Capo d'Otranto. The Salento peninsula and the Bari and Capitanata plains to the north are the main wine-growing areas of this region, but the highest Murge plateau is also covered with vines. Summers are hot and dry, but there are weather fluctuations due to air currents that move from the Adriatic towards the Apennines
